This was the site of the notorious Paris premiere of Tannhäuser, withdrawn after three performances.

The three Tannhäuser evenings became a turning point in Wagner’s relationship with Parisian opera. At the home of French grand opera, his revised score met institutional expectations, organised social protest and a very public failure.
