Richard Wagner Sculpture on La-Spezia-Platz

The life-size bronze by the artist Aidyn Zeinalov – a gift from the twin city of La Spezia for the 20th anniversary of the partnership – shows Richard Wagner seated and recalls his 1853 stay in La Spezia, where the E-flat major motif of the ‘Rheingold’ prelude came to him in a half-dream.

01 / Why this place matters

Afterlife

The sculpture recalls Wagner’s account that the opening of Das Rheingold came to him as if in a dream at La Spezia in 1853. As a gift from the partner city, it turns that creation story into a present-day exchange between Bayreuth and La Spezia.
